Palazzo Pretorio

The Palazzo Pretorio is an ancient medieval building from the 14th century in the Cathedral square of Pietrasanta.

The Palazzo Pretorio is an ancient medieval building from the 14th century in the Cathedral square of Pietrasanta. It is also known as Palazzo di Perrotto degli Streghi, from the name of the owner, a citizen of Lucca, who gave it to the community. Since then the Palace was the seat of the Captain of Justice and housed the prisons. Later it was the seat of the Banco dei Vicari, and finally of the Magistrates' Court. In the vestibule and on the facade, as usual, it presents numerous marble coats of arms of the families who ruled the government of Pietrasanta over time. The central access portal is made of marble and dates back to the 16th century, with eighteenth-century additions. The palace was renovated in the 15th, 18th and 19th centuries. For some time it housed a theater hall and today houses some municipal offices.
